Job Description
PURPOSE: The Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing skilled maintenance of the Public Services operations including highway, parks, buildings, grounds, and cemetery maintenance.
SCOPE: Maintenance of Township roads, grounds and internal buildings.
ESSENTIAL ROLES & RESPONSIBLILITIES: Duties and responsibilities may include all duties but not limited to:
• In a safe and effective manner, operate heavy equipment such as: excavator, grader, backhoe, tractor, mower, dump truck, snow plow, pavement grinder, air hammer, chain saw, paint or striping machine and various other equipment, hand and power tools.
• Maintains and repair physical facilities including roads, ditches and highways, storm, sewer and irrigation pipelines/catch basins, fire hydrants, machines and grounds; trim trees, shrubs and brush; spray chemicals as needed; paint, clean and lubricate pumps, machines and related equipment; perform rough carpentry and concrete work; paint buildings and facilities; and perform custodial duties as assigned.
• Opens and closes Township facilities. Set-up and breakdown of equipment, fixtures and decorations for Township events.
• Manually shovels and moves road salt, dirt, snow, etc.; descend ladders into trenches or drywells or climb to elevated positions; and climb in and out of heavy equipment.
• Conducts work in all kinds of weather. Requires working safely in confined spaces and dangerous situations such as flagging in heavy traffic, working in trenches, ditches and overflowing creeks. Work with color-coded maps and drawings.
• Interfaces with computer systems to enter data or prepare reports. Maintains various programs/data on computer such as daily work logs and maintenance programs.
• Utilizes manufacturers’ instructions to accomplish tasks.
• Performs all duties in a safe manner and per applicable Federal, State and local rules and regulations.
• Prepares work documentation and reports and completes other necessary paperwork, for the Supervisor Foreman.
CRITICAL SKILLS / EXPERTISE:
• Thorough knowledge of state laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles upon highways.
• Ability to make minor repairs on automotive and motor-driven equipment.
• Good physical condition with no serious defect of vision, hearing, or members.
• Skill and care in the operating of motor vehicles.
• Knowledge of building grounds, and road maintenance methods, tools, materials, and supplies.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
• Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work under occasionally adverse weather conditions.
EDUCATION, LICENSING & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-Class A).
• Six (6) months experience in the operation of a 3-ton truck.
• To be on call 24-hours per day for snow emergencies and to work at other than regular hours when needed to perform the duties of the position.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and to reach with hands and arms.
• The employee must be able to lift and/or move varying amounts of weight, depending upon the task at hand. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to kneel, bend at the waist, and work in a standing position for long periods.
