About the Firm
A well-established architecture and engineering firm in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, is seeking a licensed Electrical Engineer to lead and grow its electrical engineering practice.
The firm brings architecture, interior design, and structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering together under one roof. With a collaborative team of approximately 30 professionals working from a single office, engineers work closely with architects and interior designers throughout the entire project lifecycle—from initial concepts through construction and final punch lists.
The firm has a diverse portfolio spanning education, civic buildings, museums, performing arts venues, transportation facilities, healthcare, commercial projects, and historic renovations throughout Southwest Virginia and North Carolina.
The Role
This is a senior-level, department-defining position for a licensed electrical engineer who wants to take ownership of building electrical design while helping shape the future of the discipline.
You will serve as the firm's electrical engineering authority, leading project design and construction administration while establishing standards, selecting tools and workflows, mentoring staff, and helping develop the electrical engineering practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Design electrical power, lighting, communications/data, and related building systems
- Prepare electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, and project documentation
- Serve as the licensed electrical engineer for projects across education, civic, cultural, commercial, and institutional sectors
- Take ownership of electrical scopes from project inception through construction
- Review and seal electrical engineering drawings and documents as appropriate
- Mentor junior and developing engineering staff
- Conduct job-site visits and field investigations
- Lead interdisciplinary coordination with architecture, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and other disciplines
- Provide construction administration support, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and site observations
- Establish and improve electrical engineering standards, processes, and design practices
- Contribute to the continued growth and development of the electrical engineering discipline
Qualifications
Required
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Electrical Engineering
- Virginia PE license required; comity licensure support is available for engineers currently licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction
- 7+ years of professional experience in building electrical design
- Strong experience with power, lighting, and communications/data systems
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage and take responsibility for a project's electrical scope
- Ability to seal electrical engineering drawings and documents
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and team collaboration abilities
Preferred
- Experience with AutoCAD and Revit MEP
- Strong lighting design experience, particularly with assembly, museum, theater, or performing arts projects
- Experience with emergency power, generators, life-safety systems, and institutional facilities
- Previous experience building, managing, or leading an electrical engineering team
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering environment
