Job Description
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the commissioning, startup, and operational readiness of power generation and energy systems. This role provides electrical engineering expertise throughout pre-commissioning, commissioning, testing, and system turnover to ensure electrical equipment and integrated systems operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with project specifications.
The ideal candidate has experience with electrical power systems, protection and control equipment, and field commissioning activities. This position involves hands-on work in active construction and industrial environments, collaboration with multidisciplinary project teams, and technical troubleshooting to ensure systems are ready for energization and operation.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Commissioning & Startup
- Provide electrical engineering support throughout pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, and system turnover.
- Lead and support commissioning activities involving switchgear, transformers, generators, protection relays, control systems, and associated electrical equipment.
- Perform and oversee electrical testing, including insulation resistance testing, high-potential (hi-pot) testing, relay testing, and functional verification.
- Support pre-commissioning activities such as loop checks, instrument calibration, and protection system verification.
- Troubleshoot electrical equipment and system issues in the field and coordinate corrective actions.
- Verify that electrical systems meet project requirements and are ready for safe energization and operation.
Power Systems Engineering & Analysis
- Review and validate short-circuit, protective coordination, and arc-flash studies against as-built system conditions before energization.
- Interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, and control system documentation.
- Support power generation and battery energy storage system (BESS) integration, including system-level testing and performance verification.
- Assist with grid integration, electrical protection, and control system integration activities.
- Ensure electrical installations and commissioning activities comply with applicable engineering standards and project specifications.
Project Coordination & System Turnover
- Coordinate and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and Ready for Startup (RFSU) activities.
- Collaborate with project management, construction, commissioning, controls, and operations teams to support coordinated execution and system readiness.
- Work with equipment manufacturers and vendors to coordinate installation, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
- Develop, review, and maintain commissioning documentation, including Inspection and Test Records (ITRs), test reports, redline drawings, and turnover packages.
- Identify, document, track, and resolve punch-list items before system handover.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and the development of standardized commissioning procedures, tools, and processes.
Safety & Technical Leadership
- Maintain compliance with applicable National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and site-specific safety requirements.
- Follow established electrical safety procedures and ensure appropriate precautions are taken during testing and energization.
- Support safe work practices in active construction, commissioning, and industrial environments.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology accompanied by a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
- At least four years of experience in electrical engineering, power systems, or commissioning within power generation, industrial, or related environments.
- Working knowledge of electrical power systems and equipment, including switchgear, transformers, and generators.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, and control system documentation.
- Understanding of electrical commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and startup procedures.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and equipment vendors.
- Commitment to electrical safety, quality standards, and technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience with power generation facilities, data centers, or battery energy storage systems.
- Experience leading or supporting electrical commissioning, startup, and energization activities.
- Familiarity with FAT, SAT, PSSR, RFSU, and formal system turnover processes.
- Experience with power system studies, protection coordination, and arc-flash analysis.
- Knowledge of grid integration, energy storage technologies, and electrical control systems.
Technical Skills
- Power System Analysis: Experience with ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, MATLAB, or similar engineering tools.
- Electrical Testing: Familiarity with protection relay testing and electrical test equipment, including Omicron, Doble, and Megger.
- Protection & Safety: Understanding of protective relaying, coordination studies, and arc-flash analysis.
- Energy Systems: Knowledge of power generation, grid integration, and battery energy storage systems.
- Controls & Integration: Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and electrical control system integration.
Work Environment
This is a field-based engineering role supporting active construction, commissioning, and startup activities. The position requires regular work in industrial environments and strict adherence to electrical safety procedures and site requirements.
Candidates must be comfortable working in changing field conditions, collaborating with construction and operations personnel, and responding to technical challenges during commissioning and startup.
Work Schedule & Physical Requirements
- Schedule: Six days per week, Monday through Saturday, with 10-hour shifts.
- Availability for occasional night shifts, holiday work, and schedule adjustments as project demands require.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures, noisy environments, and confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and team-lift heavier equipment when necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, and squat for extended periods.
- Ability to work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, or elevated work platforms while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and electrical testing and diagnostic equipment.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will combine strong electrical engineering fundamentals with practical field commissioning experience. They will be proactive in identifying and resolving technical issues, committed to safe and reliable system operation, and capable of coordinating effectively across engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations teams.
A hands-on approach, attention to detail, and a focus on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement will be essential to success in this role.
