Position Summary

In addition to the job duties of a Medical Technologist, the Technical Supervisor provides technical and scientific oversight of the Medical Center Laboratory in accordance with CLIA, applicable federal and state regulations, Medical Center policies and accepted laboratory standards. Provides technical leadership, consultation, and expertise to ensure laboratory testing is accurate, reliable, efficient, and performed according to established performance specifications. Collaborates with the Laboratory Manager, laboratory staff, Medical Center departments, medical staff, and external agencies to support quality patient care and regulatory compliance.

Must be accessible to the laboratory for on-site, telephone, or electronic technical consultation and is not required to be physically on-site when testing is performed.

Job Qualifications - Technical Supervisor Required Qualifications

The Technical Supervisor must meet CLIA requirements and under 42 CRF 4931449 for the laboratory specialties and subspecialties they are responsible for supervising.

The individual must have appropriate combination of education, laboratory experience, training, and high-complexity laboratory experience required by CLIA. For chemistry, hematology, diagnostic immunology, and immunohematology, the applicable CLIA requirements include:

• Bachelor's degree: At least 4 years of high-complexity laboratory training and / or experience in the applicable specialty.
• Master's degree: At least 2 years of high-complexity laboratory training and / or experience in applicable specialty.
• Doctoral degree: At least 1 year of high-complexity laboratory training and / or experience in applicable specialty.

Microbiology and its subspecialties have additional requirements, including specific experience within the applicable microbiology subspecialties. The individual's education and laboratory experience must be appropriate to the specific area of testing they will supervise. All education, training, laboratory experience must be documented and verified before the individual is assigned to the technical supervisor role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, or a related laboratory science.
• Demonstrated experience performing high-complexity laboratory testing.
• Demonstrated experience with laboratory quality management, quality control, proficiency testing, competency assessments, and regulatory compliance.
• Experience with laboratory instrumentation, verification / validation, troubleshooting, and implementation of new systems.
• Previous laboratory leadership, supervisory, technical specialist or lead experience.
• Strong communication, organizational skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Other Responsibilities

Performs clinical laboratory testing and other laboratory duties when qualified and assigned. Will performing Testing Personnel and / or General Supervisor duties when separately qualified under applicable CLIA requirements and assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Medical Director. All duties must remain within the individual's documented CLIA qualifications.

Physical / Working Requirements

• Ability to perform laboratory testing and related duties as required.
• Ability to work with laboratory instrumentation, specimens, chemicals, biological materials, and other materials routinely encountered in the clinical laboratory.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically.
• Ability to respond to technical issues, and provide consultation as needed.
• Ability to meet Medical Center requirements for occupational health, infection prevention, safety, and other applicable workplace standards.

Requirements for Employment --

• Background Check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation conducted by the State of Alaska in accordance with applicable regulations.
• Drug Screening. All employees must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, which includes testing for marijuana.
• Immunization Compliance. Employees are required to meet all immunization requirements as mandated by the State of Alaska and Federal regulations governing healthcare facilities.
