Position Summary

The Youth Program Specialist supports the development, coordination, and delivery of Petersburg Medical Center (PMC) Youth Programs, including Kinder Skog, Forest Kindy, ORCA Camps, and other youth programming.

This position supports day-to-day program operations, outdoor education, youth engagement, equipment and resource management, staff development, safety, and program quality. The Youth Program Specialist will work directly with youth in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings and may assist with or lead outdoor activities based on training and certification.

The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, collaborative, adaptable, and passionate about working with youth. They should be comfortable working outdoors in Southeast Alaska, managing program logistics, maintaining equipment, and supporting high-quality, developmentally appropriate youth experiences.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children and youth, preferably in outdoor, recreational, educational, camp, or community-based settings.
• Strong understanding of child and youth development and the importance of positive relationships and supportive adult mentorship.
• Comfortable working with youth outdoors in a variety of Southeast Alaska weather conditions.
• Ability to effectively supervise and engage youth in natural environments.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established procedures.
• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a collaborative team.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to meet applicable background check and employment requirements.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

• Experience in outdoor education, environmental education, camp programming, recreation, education, or youth development.
• Knowledge of Southeast Alaska's natural environment, recreation opportunities, flora, fauna, and outdoor safety considerations.
• Familiarity with ACA accreditation standards and camp best practices.
• Experience with equipment inventory, maintenance, and outdoor gear management.
• Experience developing lesson plans, procedures, educational resources, or staff trainings.
• Ability to lead or assist with kayaking, hiking, camping, skiing, biking, or other outdoor activities appropriate to training and certification.
• Familiarity with USFS permitting and reporting processes.
• Strong interest in promoting healthy, active lifestyles and meaningful outdoor experiences for youth.

Additional Required or Recommended Training

The employee must obtain and maintain training and certifications appropriate to the responsibilities of the position. Depending on program needs, these may include:

• First Aid / CPR
• Wilderness First Aid / Wilderness First Responder
• Youth Mental Health First Aid
• De-escalation and crisis response
• Outdoor risk assessment and management
• Child abuse prevention / mandated reporting
• Specialized outdoor activity certifications as appropriate to assigned responsibilities

Position Goal

The Youth Program Specialist helps create and sustain high-quality youth programming where children can build resilience, curiosity, confidence, connection, and practical skills through meaningful relationships and outdoor experiences.

Requirements for Employment

• Background Check. Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background investigation conducted by the State of Alaska in accordance with applicable regulations.
• Drug Screening. All employees must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, which includes testing for marijuana.
• Immunization Compliance. Employees are required to meet all immunization requirements as mandated by the State of Alaska and Federal regulations governing healthcare facilities.
