Create enticing (and strategically crafted) job advertisements:
This may seem obvious, but crafting job advertisements that are enticing, clear, and strategic is the first step in ensuring that your job listing makes it to various job boards.
Specific job boards, such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and Google Jobs, require that you meet specific industry standards and guidelines before posting. If the standards for job advertisements are not met, your ad will not be published.
Here are key tips to keep in mind when crafting a great job advertisement:
- Discrimination is prohibited. Ensure that you avoid discriminatory factors or words in your job advertisement, such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, and disability, for example. Even if it is not obvious, it’s best to avoid anything related to topics that can be viewed as discriminatory, as specific job boards will have automated checks that run through content to pick up keywords or topics like the above. An example could be, “We’re looking for a young and energetic person.” Content like this may be interpreted as ageist and discriminatory.
- Duplicate job listings: Job boards like Indeed will review your job post against duplicates that may exist, so it’s essential to ensure you post unique job ads, even if you have multiple vacancies.
- Poorly written job titles and low-quality job advertisements: As a job seeker, it can be highly frustrating to find a job listing that seems to be a good fit but then contains conflicting or missing information.
- You need to create concise, clear, and well-structured job ads that include key information about the job opportunity. Irrelevant job titles and missing requirements can be off-putting to great candidates and will also result in your listing being flagged for poor content.
- Suspicious or sponsored job advertisements: Job boards like Indeed will not promote or accept non-paid job vacancies, such as training opportunities or “commission-only” types of roles. This also includes multi-level marketing (MLM) types of roles. You should also avoid requesting money or fees from candidates to avoid being flagged.
How to post your job on Ninja Gig:
Now that you’re aware of what to keep in mind when creating a job advertisement, let’s focus on how Ninja Gig can help you avoid the common pitfalls when posting to job boards.
It might seem overwhelming to know what to include, but Ninja Gig has cleverly created a comprehensive job advertisement template that guides you through creating the perfect listing from start to finish.
Ninja Gig also helps outline things to look out for before creating your job advertisement.
1. Job Title:
Do: The first step is to create a compelling job title that is clear, direct, and can be easily searched for by prospective applicants. Such as “Sales Director” or “Business Development Manager.”
Don’t: Vague titles that include symbols or actions around urgency, such as “Apply Today! Urgently Hiring For: *Our next sales guru!*”
2. Enable / Disable Visibility Online:
This allows you to easily edit the advertisement before potential applicants can view it online.
Do: Ensure that your job advertisement is fully complete and ready to be posted online.
Don’t: Ensure that you have disabled the job so that it doesn’t show online if you’re not ready to post it.
3. Select Employment Type:
Do: Ensure that the employment type (such as part-time/full-time, etc) is relevant to the job type that you’re posting.
Don’t: Don’t amend the employment type (or job details) after publishing the advertisement online. Editing job details or applications means that some applicants who may have already applied for the position based on the specific information, such as employment type, may find it misleading.
3. Publish Job to Job Boards:
Ninja Gig offers a simple drop-down option to publish your job directly to multiple job boards, including Indeed, Google Jobs, ZipRecruiter, and others. Using these preset settings makes it simple to cover a wide range of job boards with a single job advertisement!
Do: First, double-check that you have already selected the option to enable job visibility online (see point 2 above); otherwise, your job listing will not be posted.
Don’t: Remember to ensure you’ve adhered to the job standards and guidelines mentioned above before posting. Don’t post incomplete jobs to the job board. If you’re not ready, you can save the job to your job template library and return to it later.
5. Include job location details:
Do: Include correct and up-to-date information for the job listing and ensure that you’ve stated whether the position will be work from home or not. Remote working policies could also be included, stating whether the position is remote, office-based, or hybrid, along with precise location details.
You can make use of the dropdown options provided, which help save time when creating your job post.
Don’t: Avoid misleading job locations. For example, your head office may be located in a different state or country from where the job applicant would typically be based.
6. Job Description:
Here’s where the essential details really come into play! First and foremost, remember the guidelines mentioned above when creating the content for the position.
Do: Write clear and well-formatted job details to help candidates easily identify key information, such as the core responsibilities of the role, within a few sentences or bullet points.
Include specific key qualifications or requirements; this will help guide the selection of the right skills and ensure the suitability of applications.
You can also highlight unique benefits or aspects of the company culture, which may help prospective applicants determine if the job is a good fit for them.
Don’t: Create lengthy job advertisements that contain too much text. Remember, many job seekers use mobile phones when viewing vacancies, so this can lead to a negative experience if it requires them to scroll through lengthy pages of text.
7. Additional details:
Do: Include additional information (even if it seems optional) such as nice-to-know details about your company. Including your website and a link to your YouTube channel can help candidates determine if the company is a good cultural fit for them.
Remuneration details, such as base pay or salary range, are important to include and can help attract more candidates.
Don’t: Include irrelevant information such as internal jargon that won’t make sense to outside applicants. You may also want to exclude unimportant benefits, such as “lunch hour” or “great coffee.”
8. Application Questions:
This is one of the most important steps! So don’t skip this one.
Here is where many hiring managers or recruiters make mistakes unknowingly. When creating a job listing, it’s critical to have smart application questions that will help filter out those resumes that may not fit the position that you’re hiring for.
We recommend using Ninja Gig’s application questions strategically to help you craft the perfect set of application questions. The great news is that these questions can be saved (in the Global Custom Questions) and used for future job advertisements, so make sure you save these.
Do: Aside from the usual questions, such as name, surname, and resume, you’ll want to ensure you include relevant application questions, such as qualifications.
Ninja Gig’s settings allow you to create tick-boxes or dropdown lists, free text, and other formats. Using a tick box option for qualifications will save applicants a lot of time when selecting those relevant to them.
Try to be inclusive when creating options for levels of experience. If you require a specific level of expertise, also provide options for those without experience. For example, you can offer an option for “No experience but willing to learn.” This will allow applicants to answer truthfully, but it also means you can filter out those who do not meet your specific experience requirements. Try to include knock-out questions if you need someone willing to travel for the role, with only a yes/no answer to choose from.
Note: You can preview this view before posting! This will help you see what it looks like for potential candidates before advertising.
Don’t: Avoid any discriminatory application questions like those topics mentioned above, including age/race/gender. Do not request personal information that may be unnecessary at this stage, such as social security numbers or driver’s license numbers. This level of information detail is not relevant at this stage of the process. You can request this information later on, should you proceed to the offer or hiring stages.
Once you’ve created the job posting, it’s essential to ensure that the ad is visible on your site as well as the above-mentioned job boards. Ninja Gig makes it simple to post to your site and helps customize the ad with your logo, corporate colors, and additional company information. You can review the advertisement to ensure the format, style, and information look professional and enticing to prospective candidates.
Top tip:
Remember to save generic job advertisements to your template library, along with your custom application questions. Specific job ad or application question details can be amended later on, should you need to tweak the advertisement or questions with specific information.
