Position Overview

The Underwriter possesses comprehensive knowledge of dental and medical underwriting, the marketplace, and the competition as well as familiarity with the underwriting practices of other insurance carriers. Applies and demonstrates appropriate underwriting judgement and rationale in making recommendations and decisions.

 

Essential Functions

·         Calculate premium rates to meet overall corporate financial and enrollment objectives using rating formulae, underwriting judgement, and other accepted underwriting practices.

·         Produce supporting documentation for the Sales Department including: rate development, illustrations, special reports and exhibits, financial analyses, etc., within established time frames.

·         Prepare settlement calculations for alternate funding arrangements while achieving contractual obligations.

·         Enforce adherence to established underwriting guidelines.

·         Communicate rate and benefit information to Operations Department needed to implement new business accounts and renewals.

·         Assist in the development of new products and pricing methods.

·         Prepare group specific claim and utilization reports.

·         Perform tasks on mid-size accounts including alternative funding arrangements, responding to rate reviews, and completing formal proposal responses.

·         Prepare renewal rate exhibits and new business proposal exhibits.

·         Complete assigned monthly experience-rated renewals and recommend renewal rate action for approval.

·         Assist with special Underwriting and Actuarial projects as needed.

 

 

Requirements

·         Bachelor’s Degree in mathematics, finance, actuarial science

·         Experience in Underwriting or a related profession is preferred

 

 

Skills & Knowledge

·         Strong technical knowledge, computer and data analysis skills including advanced Excel

·         Possess solid analytical skills and thoughtful judgement in order to make decisions independently

·         Must be detail-oriented, thorough, and accurate

·         Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills

·         Ability to multi-task and demonstrate flexibility while maintaining attention to detail

·         Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
