Job Description Job Summary Under limited supervision, this person is responsible for placing individuals in the most appropriate employment setting and for assisting him/her on a daily basis.
Job Summary: Responsible for providing nursing services and first aid care to employees and individuals we support, ensuring a safe and educational environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Provide nursing services and first aid to employees or individuals we support who become ill or injured; assess situation and implement emergency protocol as outlined in policies and procedures.
Evaluate and determine the ability of individuals we support to participate in activities with regard to their individual medical condition.
Educate and support individuals we support with medical concerns or situations and their families.
Educate, supervise and evaluate employees in medical procedures.
Perform various routing nursing functions including ensuring that all changes in medical status are updated; contact Physician as necessary, particularly if problems develop.
Provide input into Health and Safety Policies and Procedures for LIFESPAN; Write, implement and evaluate health care plans for specific needs of the individuals we support.
Participate in Person Centered Planning (PCP) Meetings concerning medically complex individuals. Attend quarterly team review meetings for the individuals we support.
Conduct home visits; participate in doctor visits and hospitalizations as necessary.
Prepare, process and maintain a variety of documentation (e.g. accident reports, utilization reports, medical records, immunization records, professional contact letters, medication disposal records, medication authorizations and administrations, special procedure authorizations, seizure logs, weight management activities, disease management activities and procedures, etc.).
Attend various committee meetings (e.g. Health and Safety Committee, Transition Team, Human Rights Committee); attends continuing education classes as required.
Teach various medical classes at programs and for all new hires in Preservice (e.g. gastrostomy feeding, medication administration, oxygen administration, suctioning, tracheostomy care, Bloodborne Pathogens, seizure first aid, chest percussion, first aid* and CPR*). *Both of these require a certification.
Interact and communicate with a variety of individuals and groups (e.g. students, teachers, supervisor, parents, physicians, sales representatives, PCP committees, human rights committees, community partners and nursing agencies).
Operate and maintain an assortment of equipment, machinery and tools used in the performance of daily activities (e.g. suction machine, computer, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, syringes, thermometers)
Maintain the confidentiality of staff and individuals.
Abide by, enforce and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of all LIFESPAN safety standards and regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities; however, this position must supervise LPN’s a certain number of hours per week as required by state regulations.

Education and/or Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with license in good standing as a Registered Nurse in NC and one to two years of pediatric nursing experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Must possess strong facilitation skills and be able to speak before an audience with poise and confidence.
Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Physical Requirements Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; work requires walking, standing, reaching, fingering, stooping, etc. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights up to one hundred and fifty pounds with assistance. Will lift no more than forty pounds independently.
Other Qualifications Instructor’s Certification for CPR/First Aid.
Additional and/or Program Specific Responsibilities: A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and approved automobile insurance are required for this position.
