Job Summary

The Activities Assistant works within the Activities Department to carry out resident activity care plans and provide therapeutic activities for ICF and SNF residents.

Duties Include
  • Provides individual and group activities that help residents maintain independence, allows participation in past hobbies and interests, encourages social interaction and focuses on the needs and interests of residents.
  • Works with other departments such a Rehabilitation to provide therapeutic recreation and may lead activities or assist residents to participate.
  • Helps to plan and implement special meals and potlucks with the Activities Director.
  • Works with LTC volunteers as directed.
  • Works with new admissions to ICF and SNF to help them feel welcome in LTC, to become familiar with the routines and help identify activities of interest.
  • Helps to escort resident to functions within the community and plan outings.
  • Keeps daily recreational records for each resident.
  • Distributes resident mail given the Activities Department. Assists residents with their mail and correspondence.
  • Assists with the monthly Resident's Council meetings. May be asked to keep the minutes of the meetings. Serves as an advocate for residents / patients' rights.
  • Contributes to the development of resident's activity plan. Suggests ongoing revisions and provides input into progress toward activity goals.
  • Provides one-on-one interaction and activities for residents unable to participate in group activities.
  • Helps to maintain the bulletin boards for the activities calendar and special events.
  • Assists during meals, with residents shopping as a planned activity.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school or college graduate with experience working with the aged. Recreational skills, ability & creativity are needed to work effectively with residents.
  • Prior experience with therapeutic recreation or occupational therapies helpful.
  • Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) background helpful
  • Must have patience, tact, enthusiasm and the ability to keep work related situations confidential.
Training and Experience
  • Must possess the skills and ability to work with the aged and chronically ill, Alzheimer patients and physically handicapped.
  • Must be able to classify functioning levels of residents and provide activities to meet exercise needs, cultural needs, arts, crafts, sensory stimulation programs, group and one-on-one activities and social needs as outlined in the Activity Plan.
  • Shall maintain current certification in CPR or be willing to become CPR certified at PMC's next scheduled course.
  • Should have a valid Alaska driver's license and complete training to become a certified driver of the PMC handicapped van.

Hours
  • Schedule is primarily dayshift hours. However, flexibility is a must to allow resident participation in evening and weekend events.

Accountability
  • This position reports to the Activity Coordinator and the Long Term Care Director of Nursing.
  • Day-to-day direction and instruction will come primarily from the Activity Coordinator. Oversight and direction may also come from the Nursing staff.
