Position Type: Part-Time/Seasonal, April/May through September of 2018
Starting Salary: $10.00 per hour
Hours: Up to 29 hours per week
The Facilities and Grounds Technician maintains grounds of Town-owned property by performing general labor to keep public areas such as beach accesses and sidewalks clean and free of debris. The Facilities and Grounds Technician is also responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of bathroom facilities at Town parks and public beach accesses.
Duties and Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the Town.
• Maintains trees, shrubs, and flower beds by planting, pruning, trimming, and removing weeds.
• Removes trash from public trash cans and ensures areas are kept clear of refuse.
• Monitors fluid levels, cleans equipment, and reports equipment and maintenance needs.
• Cleans beach accesses and project sites to include picking up trash, clearing debris, moving refuse to appropriate areas, and maintaining grounds.
• Cleans restrooms at various Town locations by sanitizing and disinfecting walls, doors, toilets, sinks, floors, and mirrors.
• Stocks supplies such as toilet tissue, paper towels, and soap at public restrooms.
• Maintains sidewalks by clearing debris and edging.
• Assists with special events by transporting and installing special equipment and signage.
• Directs traffic during events.
• Works irregular hours including weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and the ability to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job such as those listed above.
Licenses and Professional Certifications
• NC Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general maintenance techniques related to area of assignment; cleaning products and procedures; safety requirements; equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance and repair activities; pruning and trimming techniques; grass varieties and care techniques; and cleaning materials.
Skilled in driving a vehicle; using hand and power tools; spreading grass seed; removing weeds; transporting and installing landscape materials; mowing and maintaining grass; equipment and small engine repair; operating cleaning equipment; cleaning and sanitizing surfaces; and communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Ability to represent the Town in a professional and respectful manner while interacting with a diverse set of individuals within the workplace and the community.
Employee is generally exposed to outdoor conditions and may be frequently exposed to weather elements including rain, wind, varying temperatures, etc. In addition, the employee must effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high work places, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, hazards of working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters. Employee is also subject to inside environmental conditions having the lighting, temperature, and noise of an open floor-plan office environment.
The employee must read and write, and interact with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. Travel is required daily to outside sites in order to perform the duties described above, as well as to attend meetings, trainings, events, and other business activities. Work may require walking, standing, bending, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, and/or moving equipment, pushing and pulling various objects, climbing stairs and ladders, and operating assigned equipment including motor vehicles. Must be able to perform medium to heavy work exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
