Job Description

The Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

Job Duties:
  • Demonstrates and adheres to principles of aseptic techniques
  • Knowledgeable of all basic set-ups for surgical procedures
  • Assists in ensuring patient safety
  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques
  • Assists in set up of operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies
  • Assists with the preparation, transportation, and monitoring of patients
  • Arranges instruments according to routine for given procedure
  • Handles instruments according to routine for given procedure
  • Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure
  • Performs room clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations as directed
  • Functions in the role of second assistant following successful skills demonstration
  • Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, initiative, work relations, training needs)
  • Reviews physicians' preference cards and updates as needed
  • Assists with stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Develop communication skills and promote departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care
  • Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care

Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Graduate of Surgical Tech program of study required. Scru Tech certification required.

Training/Experience:
Previous experience is highly desired.
